‘A vast study of the history, the doctrine and the liturgy of the Orthodox Church has been lacking for a long time,’ claims the Patriarch Alexis in his preface. Here is the first volume - three are to follow – of a work whose ambition is to fill that gap. Designed as a systematic exposé of the history, canonical structures, theology, moral and social doctrine of the liturgy and the spiritual life of the Orthodox Church, Mgr Hilarion Alfeyev’s work presents Orthodox Christianity as a complete theological and liturgical system and vision of the world. Orthodox theology is based on liturgical experience; the main characteristics of Orthodox art – the icon, chants, architecture – flow from the theology and liturgy. Theology and liturgy also influence the aesthetic practices, the personal piety of each Christian in particular, but also the position of the Church in relation to other Christian confessions, other religions and secular society. The author constantly comes back to the historical sources of Orthodoxy and relates the foundation of the Church by Christ, the apostolic years, the era of martyrs, the councils and Byzantium until its fall. He goes on to present a panorama of contemporary Orthodoxy in the world, often referring to its great figures, Fathers of the Church and saints, whose works are generously quoted. The book doesn’t claim to treat the subject exhaustively: it is neither an encyclopaedia nor a textbook, but a speculative interpretation of Orthodoxy in all its diversity, its historical and contemporary existence. It addresses readers already acquainted with the Orthodox world, who would like to complete and systemize their knowledge.
