The aim of this book is to give readers a better understanding of what it means to love one another, the core of Christian life, and to give concrete advice on how to make progress on this quality. The approach resembles musical ‘variations’: a theme recurs and is progressively developed in various ways, with a certain freedom that permits us to gradually unveil its potential and richness. Devoted to charity, the book treats other inextricably linked themes; such as the love of God and the Spiritual love of the self. Great importance is given to the dispositions charity involves, and which form its decisive criteria - like the non-judgement of others or loving one’s enemies. It shows how, in a Christian perspective, charity can be involved in support and assistance offered to those in need: not only material, but also psychological and spiritual, as well as in the domains of social relations, conjugal life or the education of children. Stressing the fact that charity is not simply an act or a feeling, the book reveals its close links with spiritual life as a whole, especially showing how the practice of other divine precepts – which free man from his passions and allow him, correlatively, to acquire the different virtues – conditions veritable love and, in synergy with grace, give him his true dimension and lead to perfection. In the first part, these themes are treated in reflections based on the teachings of the Holy Scriptures and the Fathers; in the second part, by exposés which present the teaching of some great orthodox spiritual thinkers of our times; in the third part, by commented texts drawn from three sources.
