Svami Karpatri (1907-1982) rétablit dans ces pages l’évidence du monothéisme hindou. Dans deux synthèses transcendantes sur le « linga », icône aniconique, symbole du Principe au-delà de la forme, il met en pièces les idées fausses de « culte du phallus », de « polythéisme hindou » et de « sivaïsme pré-aryen » diffusées par le premier vulgarisateur de ces textes, Alain Daniélou. Puis, dans un vaste panorama consacré à la Déesse — tour à tour héroïne épique, principe féminin de grâce et de beauté, mais aussi symbole du Principe suprême —, il établit des ponts entre deux voies de réalisation spirituelle, l’Advaita Vedanta et Srividya. La traduction entièrement nouvelle, établie sur les originaux publiés pour la première fois en Occident, met en lumière l’enseignement doctrinal en acte d’un maître spirituel contemporain qui combattit aussi bien le nationalisme néo-hindou que l’ingérence de l’État séculariste dans les affaires de la religion.

In this book, Svami Karpatri (1907-1982) restates the evidence of Hindu monotheism. In two transcendent summaries of ‘linga’, an aniconic icon, symbol of the Principle beyond form, he demolishes such false notions as the ‘cult of the phallus’, ‘Hindu polytheism’ and ‘pre-Aryan Shivaism’ spread by the first populariser of these texts, Alain Daniélou. Then, in a vast panorama devoted to the Goddess – seen in turn as an epic heroine, the feminine principle of grace and beauty, but also a symbol of the Supreme Principle —, the author builds bridges between two paths of spiritual realisation: the Advaita Vedanta and Srividya. This entirely new translation, made from originals published for the first time in the West, casts light on doctrinal teaching as an act of a contemporary spiritual master who fought against both Neo-Hindu nationalism and the interference of the secular State in religious affairs.
