Around the year 30, in the streets of Jerusalem, the news was spreading like wildfire: Jesus of Nazareth has risen! He is alive!... Yet the men who were proclaiming this news had themselves begun by doubting. But the risen Christ had appeared to them. He had opened their eyes. Jesus had shown himself to the Apostles. After his Resurrection from death, he intervened in Peter’s life, in the lives of the twelve who had eaten and drunk with him. He showed himself, and his redeeming power drove the disciples on to the road to proclaim the Good News to all beings. The Resurrection of Jesus lies at the heart and the foundations of Christian faith. Saint Paul declares it unambiguously: ‘And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is futile and your faith is empty.’(1 Cor 15, 14). The gospels have transmitted this founding event to the best of their ability, but it was not an easy task. For the Resurrection of Christ is not a return to earthly life, it is the passage from death to eternal life, a totally unheard of phenomenon, a radical transfiguration. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John have described with dignity what they firmly believed, and how witnesses gained faith in the Pascal mystery. The meditation of their narratives can only deepen our faith and open the way to prayer.
