How did a Catholic priest, member of a religious order that once played the role of Inquisitor, manage to direct the Philosophy Faculty of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and that for many years? And why, in spite of his exceptional integration to Israeli society, does he now live in a Palestinian quarter of East Jerusalem? Life, and the hazards of history, have obliged Father Marcel-Jacques Dubois to ask questions about life and religion that he, and many others, had believed to be settled for good. “Of course, we were naively Zionist, confusing the Jewish adventure with that of Israel, but it can happen that in the history of certain times of progress there are periods of blessed obscurity.” Throughout the three major interviews, autobiographical, political and theological, he tells of the evolution of souls in the Holy Land during the last decades. “It is difficult to know you are loved by God and to be worthy of that love. At the national level, to put it in terms that are immediately dramatic, it is difficult to proclaim, in all truth: God is on our side! One is always above or below; what we lack, in general, are acts of grace.” A spiritual testimony from a great witness of our times, these interviews and the studies and references that follow form a rare and living introduction to the situation in the Holy Land and Judeo-Christian dialogue.
