Mère de Jésus de Nazareth, Marie est l’une des figures fondamentales du christianisme à toutes les époques. Dans le Nouveau Testament, Marie est présentée par son fils comme le modèle du croyant objet de la bienveillance divine, même s’il est en même temps quelque peu réticent à son égard. Le silence se fait sur Marie après le jour de la Pentecôte, où elle reçoit avec les apôtres l’Esprit saint. Pour ce qui est de son sort final, l’imaginaire chrétien comblera cette lacune moyennant un récit qui débute avec la révélation par un ange de la fin prochaine qui l’attend, continue avec une liturgie célébrée par les apôtres rassemblés miraculeusement dans sa maison et s’achève avec la visite du Christ qui amène le corps de Marie au paradis. Ce document composé peut-être vers le milieu du Ve ou le début du VIe siècle survit dans plusieurs rédactions, notamment dans les cinq textes grecs introduits, traduits et annotés dans le présent ouvrage.

Mother of Jesus of Nazareth, Mary has been one of the constant fundamental figures of Christianity throughout the centuries. In the New Testament, Mary is presented by her son as a model for believers and the recipient of divine favour; even if he also shows some reticence toward her. We hear no more about Mary after the day of Pentecost, when she receives, with the apostles, the Holy Spirit. As to what ultimately becomes of her, Christian imagination has filled the gap with a story that begins with an angel announcing her coming end, goes on to tell of liturgy celebrated by the apostles - miraculously assembled in her dwelling-, and concludes with the visit of Christ who takes Mary’s body to paradise. This document composed around the middle of the 5th century or the beginning of the 6th has survived in several versions, particularly in five Greek texts that are introduced, translated and annotated in this book.
