Confucius was undoubtedly one of humanity’s great figures. Yet he was neither a prophet, nor the founder of a religion, nor even a philosopher in the Western sense of the word. Some have called him an erudite moralist, an ‘honest man’. He has been compared to Socrates and Montaigne. But in truth this wise man, who was also very learned, was at once a teacher of exceptional charisma, a deeply human ideologist and a man of action who sought all his life long to reform the society he lived in, which he judged to be to be in perdition. After hesitant beginnings, and thanks to the engagement of his most gifted disciples, his thoughts, the political and moral ideals he cherished finally left their indelible mark on all society, taking root in men’s minds and influencing the usages and customs of the Chinese people for two thousand years. Based on the moral values capable of transcending man, the teaching of this man, who was venerated as the Master par excellence, advocated a universal and timeless ethic. For this reason, Confucius’ spiritual legacy remains astonishingly modern. In this in-depth study, the fruit of patient research and long years of work, the author casts light on the many facets of his thinking, striving to identify its most forceful axes while constantly referring to ancient sources without neglecting more recent research.
