Osera-t-on encore s’y aventurer ?

Christian theology has become so variegated and intertwined that it resembles a dense, dark forest. Dare we still venture into it? The spirit of adventure is one of abbreviation, of concentration on uncluttered movement and simple tension. It does not become bogged down in historical sediment, tragedies about freedom, the complex play of strong wills and life’s necessities, emotions and secret habits, imperceptible inclinations or censorial strategies. The spirit of adventure confers the audacity to speak of the ineffable in a new way; not only addressing God in prayer, but daring to discuss him frankly, even though the very concept depends on the filial guarantee of Advent being confirmed! An adventure that rediscovers the fraternal consent of the light and the wild stars, the breath of the winds, the water of the seas and rivers, the fire of storms and volcanos, the shaken earth and the islands. An adventure that dares to put its trust in those who give voice to the first word. Admittedly, the adventure can prove to be as cruel as childhood, and display a certain insouciance in the face of death - its own as well as that of others. It is a simple mode of life that breaks away from an existence that is slave to efficiency and procedure, with no determining exception, and perceives its achievement in adventurous charity. Nevertheless, for theology to be an adventure, the boldness must become a genuine experience, an inner receptiveness that is capable of espousing its movement and tension, but with no claim to exhaust its inventive audacity.
