Edmond Loutil, born in 1863, was a priest in the diocese of Paris between 1888 and 1959. But we remember him above all under the penname of ‘Pierre l'Ermite’, columnist and author of considerable success. Close to the Assumptionist congregation, specialized in evangelism via the media, for sixty years he wrote a weekly column for the daily ‘La Croix’, published eleven collections of short stories and twenty-seven novels, sixteen of which sold more than 100,000 copies. This oeuvre - whose success implies that it is well worth analysing, in order to reveal the mental landscape of a part of French Catholicism - is presented here in its content and form. His fame facilitated campaigns to inform us about the action of Catholics (holiday camps for the young, the cinema or the construction of new churches...). Thanks to his celebrity, a part of the archives were conserved, providing elucidating material about the daily life of the parish ministry: parish newsletters, sermons, conferences, speeches at congresses, the constitution of worldly goods. These aspects of his activity are studied and viewed in relation to the positions that structured French Catholicism at that time. All in all, his ministry illustrates the multiple efforts made by French Catholics to define their place in society, to be present in mass culture, build efficient means of organisation and mobilisation, invent a specific modernity and make it known via an adapted discourse.
