Revue « La Vie Intellectuelle » (La)

La revue « La Vie intellectuelle », fondée en 1928 par les Pères dominicains des Éditions du Cerf, a été l'une des revues les plus importantes de la France des années 1930. Lancée pour lutter contre l'Action française après la condamnation de 1926, elle a été aussi un carrefour d'influences où s'est rencontrée toute une partie de l'élite catholique française : anciens sillonnistes ou personnes marquées par les idées de Marc Sangnier, néothomistes maritainiens, tenants de la « nouvelle chrétient頻 ou de « l'esprit des années 30 ». Ces courants complexes, s'ils n'ont jamais abouti à une synthèse véritable, ont néanmoins permis de dégager un certain nombre de directions fondamentales, aussi bien sur le plan politique et social que sur le plan international, qui se sont rejointes dans les années d'avant-guerre dans une « prérésistance » présageant les engagements futurs. Elles auront une postérité considérable autour de noms comme Étienne Borne, Jacques Madaule, Henri Guillemin, Pierre-Henri Simon et Maurice Schumann.

‘La Vie intellectuelle’, a review founded in 1928 by the Dominican Fathers of Les Éditions du Cerf, was one of the most significant in the France of the thirties. Launched to fight against Action française after its condemnation by the Vatican in 1926, it stood at a crossroads of influences, where the French Catholic elite could meet: former ‘Sillonnistes’ and those who adopted the ideas of Marc Sangnier, Maritainian neo-Thomists, believers in the ‘new Christianity’ or the ‘spirit of the thirties’. These complex currents of thought may never have accomplished an authentic synthesis, but they did succeed in emitting a certain number of fundamental directions, on the political and social scenes, nationally and internationally. They came together in the pre-war years to form a ‘pre-Resistance’ which heralded future action. Their posterity proved considerable, with names like Étienne Borne, Jacques Madaule, Henri Guillemin, Pierre-Henri Simon et Maurice Schumann.
