Despite being awaited as a relay for Spinoza’s ‘Tractatus Theologico-Politicus’, Jacques Derrida’s book on the subject was never to appear because its author had rendered its writing well-nigh impossible. Because he had in fact taken to unforeseen limits the deconstructivist forays already carried out by Spinoza into the ‘corpus’ of the Scriptures, and resorted to reason, so that the citizens of the modern States might enjoy a better life. Derrida approached this subject in such a way that a definitive volume on theological-politics would henceforth be impossible to write, except in the form of a somewhat endless interview… The voices in the title refer to those of the authors, entangled (sometimes trapped) and interlaced with that of Jacques Derrida himself - or that of his ghost, making itself heard through the generous amount of truncated, but very much alive, quotations from the body of his œuvre. This concert of explicit or concealed quotations is not the fact of excited disciples bewitched by their master’s voice but of an exploration, discussion and conversation between a dead man and the living, between the dead and the living. The setting is that of a circle, of judgement or for other purposes, the endless discussions of a little democracy composed of a handful of people and discussing - as is normal in such a political set-up - questions that occasionally have no answers, and answers that sometimes remain suspended in mid-formulation.
