‘The death of Christianity as a dominant socio-cultural phenomenon can provide the opportunity, for a numerically inferior community of faith, to regain in density what they have lost in extension. It’s up to the members of that community to make this happen.’ (Paul Ricœur) To problematize and face up to the crisis: an opportunity for thought and action? We are facing a protean crisis: it is political, economic, ecological, philosophical, theological and, more generally, a crisis in civilisation... The very notion of crisis has two very different levels of meaning and interpretation, which do not lead to paralysis but to the stimulation of human thought and activity in order to combat those routines that produce sterile repetition and ultimately, inertia. The medical and more clinical concept, which is evoked in several contributions in this collective work, tends to focus on the body of the person, group or society we suppose, affirm or claim to be ‘in crisis’; in this way the factual uniqueness of the ‘krisis’ becomes manifest. On the other hand, the links between the event of the crisis, and the necessity for reflection and critical analysis, are also the object of observations and commentaries, which seem to argue for the idea that the use of the vocabulary of crisis, far from nourishing a deleterious atmosphere of denigration and resignation, rather encourages us to revitalize the differentiated hermeneutics responsible for the tremors, questioning and eventual ruptures that characterize our society’s situation and our theoretical and practical methods of defining it today. As several contributors show, the reflexivity solicited and necessitated by the ‘krisis’ affects, concerns and nourishes theological ethics as much as theology itself.
