Kim en Joong was born in Korea in 1940. The son of a calligrapher, he studied traditional calligraphy before entering Art School in Seoul. To earn his living during his student years, he gave drawing lessons in the little seminary in Seoul. There he discovered and was converted to Christianity. In 1969, Kim en Joong came to Switzerland and France to study Western contemporary art and begin his life as a painter and artist. There, he met Dominicans and asked to join their Order. He was ordained priest in 1974. Some outstanding Dominicans among his elders encouraged him to continue his art, a sort of ‘silent preaching’ (Fra Angelico). He worked a lot during those years; before writers (Julien Green…), important gallery owners (Yoshi, Sapone, Cazeaux-Béraudière…) and specialists (Jean-Louis Prat, Bernard Antonioz…) expressed their enthusiasm for his creations, accomplished in the spirit of sacred art. Soon he was creating stained glass windows for summits of contemporary spirituality and our national heritage: the Cathedral of Évry, Chartres, the Monastery at Dax, the Abbaye of Ganagobie, Fontfroide, the Basilica in Brioude. This is the first book published on the stained glass works of Father Kim en Joong. It presents 19 great creations, which reveal the aesthetic and spiritual intensity of a work of meditation with exceptional force. A unique contemporary vision, rich in meaning, from an artist who seeks his light elsewhere.
