Between sobriety and majesty, moderation and exuberance, the throne always draws from the same symbol: that of ‘seated’ authority. For the first time, in the splendid decor of the Château de Versailles, the place par excellence of the representation of sovereignty, an exposition assembles thrones from all over the world. This book brings deeper understanding of the symbolic model, in its political, universal, economic and religious dimensions. At the beginning of the historical and artistic itinerary, one thing is clear: sovereignty always involves two distinct notions: authority and power. While power, ephemeral and acquired with difficulty, remains a fragile attribute under constant threat, authority assures its holder of the endurance of his power and universal respect: it ‘seats’ the figure, inspiring obedience which brings recognition of legitimacy. With these essential attributes — bench, canopy and footstool— the throne is also decorated with a fantastic, imaginary bestiary, with winged lions, chimera and fabulous dragons. On this decorated seat appears the majestic authority which is always represented as a seated figure. As we discover these thrones, be they stable or mobile, simple or luxurious, objects of deference or derision, a lesson emerges from these lines, intended for the masters of the world, sovereigns and heads of State, councillors or magistrates: to keep their power, they must learn the lessons taught to us by these fascinating emblems.
