Mgr Léon-Arthur Elchinger was the coadjutor of the bishop of Strasbourg when Pope John XXIII convened the Vatican II Council. Personally persuaded of the need for aggiornamento in the Church, he put all his heart into the work of the council. He was the French bishop who made most interventions during general assemblies. His speeches, with their striking ideas and vigorous style, marked peoples’ minds. The things he said when addressing his peers on ecumenism and the dialogue with Judaism are particularly remembered. His public request for the rehabilitation of Galileo also attracted attention. Ten years after his death, it seemed appropriate to present the contents of his speeches, to recall the impression they made, ask what consequences they had and what memories of them remain. The unpublished documents from the bishop’s personal archives permit us to complete this work in favourable conditions, cross-referencing with recently published experts’ journals (Congar, Chenu, de Lubac...). Mgr Elchinger spoke sixteen times during the four sessions, covering most of the major themes treated by the Council. Convinced of the importance of expert theologians, the bishop was surrounded by sure advisors. He organised theological meetings during the Council intersessions, and played the role of liaison between French and German churchmen, as he had been asked to do, to perfection. Many words pronounced at the Council by the young bishop from Alsace have kept all their pertinence, indeed their prophetic character.
