Le bout du monde

Un gros bourg entre plaines et montagnes, où l'eau vive dévale le long des rues étroites, où les fontaines chantent sous les ormes et les platanes, voilà Sorèze où Jean Mistler a vécu les années les plus belles, les plus marquantes de l'existence, celles de l'enfance. Un rêve a dominé la sienne : aller au bout du monde. Les gens de Sorèze n'avaient que quelques kilomètres à faire pour y arriver : il se trouvait alors au pied de la cascade de Malamort, à la fin du chemin qui s'accrochait dans les gorges où court le Sor. Aujourd'hui, la route ne s'achève plus à la cascade et la vie a bien changé. Était-ce vraiment la Belle Époque ? Alors, rien ne pressait et chacun vivait avec mesure dans un cadre immuable, chichement s'il le fallait – et il le fallait souvent – mais l'or n'était pas la formule magique qui donnait à ce temps-là son atmosphère enchantée. Après Sorèze vient Castelnaudary, des vacances en Allemagne, puis Carcassonne et Paris. Jean Mistler est devenu étudiant et prépare l'École normale, mais il y a la guerre, la caserne et le front avant de poursuivre ses études. Vingt ans sont là, relatés avec une sincérité familière qui donne à ces souvenirs une fraîcheur et un charme envoutants. (Publié chez Grasset en 1964)

A large village set between plains and mountains, where spring waters rush along the narrow streets and fountains sing under the elms and plane trees: that is Sorèze where Jean Mistler lived the finest and most important years of his existence – his childhood. One dream stifled all others – to travel to the ends of the earth. The people of Sorèze only had to walk a few kilometres to arrive at that point: the foot of the Malamort waterfall, at the end of a path that winds around the gorges where the river Sor flows. Today, the road no longer comes to an end at the waterfall, and life has changed a great deal. Were those really halcyon days? No rushing around, everyone living a comfortably-paced life in an unchanging world - modestly if necessary - and it was often necessary; but wealth was not the magic formula that blessed those times their enchanted atmosphere. After Sorèze came Castelnaudary, holidays in Germany, then Carcassone and Paris. Jean Mistler became a student and prepared the entrance examination for the Ecole Normale, but then came the war, with its barracks and front lines, before life could continue. Twenty years of existence are recounted with intimate sincerity that endows these memoirs with freshness and delightful charm.
