Certain words in the Gospel shock us - they are difficult, drastic and hard to take. The fact is that Jesus did not confine Himself to announcing the boundless loving kindness of the Father who welcomed back his prodigal son, and commanded his servants to slay the fatted calf for a sumptuous feast. On several occasions, we hear Jesus make radical demands on us: to become a disciple of Christ, you must brave opposition, persecution and even death; show the same love to your brother as God insists you show to your enemy; that the lowliest, the weakest and the most despised in society will be the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven; that wealth makes one a slave and the man who truly adheres to the Gospel abandons his worldly belongings and gives them to others... Should we interpret these disturbing pronouncements by Jesus literally? Without toning them down or circumventing them in any way, Michel Wackenheim carefully examines twenty such teachings. On first appearance, these statements contradict the Good News that Jesus incessantly proclaims implements in his acts of mercy and healing. But on closer inspection, believers will discover that in fact, they strengthen faith, hope and charity and help them to live the Gospel, good news indeed for those who welcome it with a humble heart. A commentary by a past author concludes each chapter. This little volume furnishes the reader with a sound biblical and spiritual itinerary.
