This study focuses on the evolving relations between Anglicans and Lutherans in Europe over the past decades. It analyses successive reports of the mixed theological commissions as well as the ‘statements’ (Meissen, Porvoo, Reuilly) officially ratified in Europe, which have irreversibly established greater unity between the Anglican Church in Britain and Ireland and the Lutheran Churches in Europe. Assessed here from an ecclesiological point of view, the collection of documents of agreement demonstrate how, on the question of apostolicity—without doubt amongst the most thorny of the current ecumenical disagreements—Anglicans and Lutherans have made substantial progress. The author also shows how Anglicans and Lutherans have conducted their doctrinal reconciliation on the question of Episcopal ministry by analysing how the transition from division to unity was achieved. While its success or failure will have consequences for the Ecumenical movement, the Luthero-Anglican dialogue has not enjoyed the reception it deserved. And yet, if it has been possible to establish ecclesial communion between Anglicans and Lutherans, shouldn’t their dialogue be taken on board now for other, larger advances in interdenominational relations?
