Après la mort des principaux Réformateurs et jusqu’en 1750, la chrétienté occidentale s’engage dans une profonde transformation. Les Églises, durablement séparées, consolident leur identité propre tout en tenant compte des transformations sociales et politiques. La redéfinition d’un « croire » s’accompagne ainsi d’une volonté de « faire croire » qui concerne les dogmatiques, les théologies politiques, la transmission institutionnelle des savoirs et raffinement des pratiques (catéchismes, dévotions, prédications). On retrouve ici, notamment, Bérulle, Turrettini, Richelieu, Bossuet, Olier ou Grotius. Cependant, c’est la théologie elle-même qui se trouve défiée par la raison dans ses fondements mêmes. Bible, Tradition, miracles et signes supranaturels en général sont réinterprétés dans un sens plus immanent par la « religion naturelle ». Moralisme et mystique se développent comme des alternatives. Spinoza, Cappel, Simon, Bayle, les Bollandistes, Leibniz, Pascal et l’influence du cartésianisme en sont des témoins. Les réponses apportées par les Églises sont diverses. On relève des crispations institutionnelles ou des mises en garde, mais aussi un fort développement de l’apologétique pour faire face à l’offensive athée. Formes nouvelles de piété, renouveau liturgique, prédication et littérature sont appelés à renouveler les Églises de l’intérieur. Wesley et Spener, Butler, dom Calmet apparaissent ici parmi beaucoup d’autres. Couvrant une période charnière, du temps des orthodoxies confessionnelles à celui des premières Lumières, ce volume propose un parcours surprenant à travers la théologie, la culture et les pratiques cultuelles du christianisme occidental.

From the deaths of the main Reformers until 1750, Western Christianity underwent a profound transformation. The Churches, now separated on a long-term basis, each consolidated its own identity, while taking into account the social and political transformations. The redefinition of ‘belief’ was accompanied by a will to ‘make others believe’ which concerned dogma, political theologies, the institutional transmission of knowledge and the refining of practices (catechism, devotions, preaching). Amongst those featured here are Bérulle, Turrettini, Richelieu, Bossuet, Olier and Grotius. However, it is theology itself that ends up being challenged in its very foundations, by reason. The Bible, Tradition, miracles and supernatural signs in general are reinterpreted in a more immanent sense by ‘natural religion’, and moralism and mysticism are developed as alternatives, as witnessed by Spinoza, Cappel, Simon, Bayle, the Bollandists, Leibniz, Pascal and the influence of Cartesianism. The Churches came up with a variety of responses. There were institutional contractions or warnings, as well as a strong development of apologetics to combat the atheistic offensive. New forms of devotion, a liturgical revival, preaching and literature were called upon to renew the Churches from within, involving Wesley, Spener, Butler and Dom Calmet, to name but a few. This book, covering a pivotal time in history, from denominational orthodoxy to the early Enlightenment, provides an astonishing journey through the theology, culture and religious practices of Western Christianity.
