Le Tannisho

Le Tannisho est considéré aujourd'hui comme l'une des meilleures introductions à l'enseignement de Shinran (1173-1263), ce religieux bouddhiste japonais qui est à l'origine de l'École véritable de la Terre pure (Jodo-Shinshu). La tradition de la Terre pure — parfois connue sous le nom d'amidisme — est la forme du bouddhisme la plus répandue en Asie, mais elle demeure mal connue en Occident, malgré l'engouement que l'on peut y constater pour le zen ou le bouddhisme tibétain. L'enseignement de Shinran était révolutionnaire à bien des égards, puisqu'il offrait à tout un chacun — même le plus démuni — la possibilité de s'affranchir de la souffrance plus facilement qu'en ce bas monde, en allant naître dès la vie prochaine auprès d'un bouddha — connu sous le nom d'Amida — pour réaliser l'éveil auprès de lui dans sa « Terre pure ». Objet de diverses interprétations au cours des siècles, notamment en Chine et au Japon, la doctrine de la Terre pure a été reformulée par Shinran en un enseignement qui l'a fait comparer à Luther, en raison de son insistance sur la foi. Souvent présenté à travers des sources de seconde main, son enseignement est ici rendu accessible à travers ses textes originaux, pour que le lecteur francophone puisse en apprécier directement la vraie saveur.

The Tannisho is considered today to be one of the finest introductions to the teaching of Shinran (1173-1263), a Japanese Buddhist monk who founded the Jodo-Shinshu (true pure land) school. The tradition of ‘pure land’ – sometimes called Amidism — is the most widespread form of Buddhism in Asia, but it remains little known in the West, in spite of the obvious popularity of Zen or Tibetan Buddhism. The teaching of Shinran was revolutionary in many ways, because it offers everyone— even the most lowly— the possibility to break free of their suffering more easily than in earthly life, by being born into their next life close to a Buddha — known as Amida — and experiencing awakening with him in his ‘pure land’. The object of various interpretations throughout the centuries, especially in China and in Japan, the doctrine of the Pure Land was reformulated by Shinran into teaching which made people compare him to Luther, because of his insistence on faith. Often presented through second hand sources, his teaching is made accessible here through original texts, so that the French-speaking reader can appreciate it directly and enjoy its true qualities.
